How to Turn-off or Change Sound Scheme in Windows Operating System

A sound theme is a set of sounds/notifications applied to events in Windows and programs. Sound theme was performed on programs events to notify when changes were made to them.

To turn-off/on or change sound scheme, first you need to open up the sounds configuration panel in Windows Operating System (Windows vista/7/8), just type in

‘mmsys.cpl

into the start menu search box and hit enter.

Then a new window will pop up, select ‘sounds’ tab.

To change sounds for program events, click a program event and then select sounds to apply.

Different program events that you can find are:
In Windows section you will the following program events:

In Windows Explorer you will find the following program events:

  • Blocked Pop-up Window
  • Complete Navigation
  • Empty Recycle Bin
  • Fax error
  • Fax sent
  • Feed Discovered
  • Incoming call
  • Move Menu Item
  • Notification bar
  • Search Provider Discovered
  • Start Navigation

In Windows Speech Recognition you will find the following program events:

  • Disambiguation numbers
  • Disambiguation Panel
  • Misrecognition
  • Off
  • On
  • Sleep

Select any of this program events to change sound system. You’ll see that the dropdown box, has sound selected. Change this to ‘None’ at the top of the list to turn-off the sound (mute).

Select other sound from the existing sounds in dropdown box, to makes the changes in the sound scheme.
